Michigan road improvements get approval

Bedford Township to spend $500,000 by mid ’16

TEMPERANCE — After a bumpy ride to the Bedford Township board meeting, trustees approved road improvement projects of nearly $500,000 on Tuesday.

Improvements were approved for a large portion of Temperance Road at a cost of $175,440. Vienna West Road will be improved between Crabb and Minx Roads for $27,680. Rauch Road between Crabb and Jackman roads will be repaired for $3,080, and Summerfield Roads will have improvements costing $217,130 between Erie and Temperance Roads.

Eight projects in all were approved, but trustee Paul Francis said a total of 22 projects, small and large, are to be finished before June, 2016.

“It is not beauty fixes, it’s safety fixes,” Mr. Francis said. “We’ve just got to do this.”

The Monroe County Road Commission is responsible to complete the projects.

Superintendent Greg Stewart said he received about 30 letters about Summerfield Road in the past week alone.

Potholes dominate most of these roads and a Temperance Road resident said he routinely sees motorists changing flat tires, likely caused by the rough roads.

“It’s been bad for 10 years,” said Bob Biggs. “The patch-up jobs don’t work too good. They patch it up every three or four months and the holes just come back up.

“It tears up people’s cars.”

His neighbor Kevin Kassuba can attest to Mr. Biggs’ point. His 2006 Mustang has been damaged by the potholes, he said. Mr. Kassuba said he has to change lanes when he’s on his motorcycle to avoid the large holes.

“They let it get so bad,” he said. “It’s horrible.”

The road improvements are meant to be more long-term fixes than the typical patch-up work. Mr. Francis said the township needs to keep up maintenance on the roads so they don’t fall into such disrepair again.

“Once we get these fixed, we need to keep them fixed,” he said. “It’ll save us short- term and long-term.”

Dean Road and Monroe Road improvements are next.

The board approved Mannik & Smith Group to begin the design work for those projects. The board also agreed to install a streetlight at the intersection of Consear and Adler roads.

Half Mile Road, not paved, also will have improvements at a cost of $14,030.

“I actually came to praise you,” said LaMar Federick during the meeting. “You’ve done the right things in some areas. But I am concerned if the [Monroe County Road Commission] can do it this summer.”

He added that the shoulder is higher than the road base on Summerfield Road. He “seriously questions the stability of that base” and how it’ll be able to be fixed for that price.
