Program to mark sinking of Fitzgerald

The National Museum of the Great Lakes will host an event today to mark the 40th anniversary of the sinking of the Edmund Fitzgerald.

The event will begin with a reception at 6 p.m., followed by a remembrance ceremony at 7 and the premiere at 7:30 of the documentary A Good Ship and Crew Well Seasoned: The Fitzgerald and her Legacy.

The freighter sank in Lake Superior during a storm Nov. 10, 1975. The 28-man crew was lost.

Though many films and books about the ship have focused on the mystery of its sinking, the documentary uses previously unpublished manuscripts, photos, and other materials to explore the history of the ship and her crew.

The film also reflects on the impact of the loss to family, friends, and colleagues of those lost aboard the Fitzgerald.

Tickets are $45 for museum members and $60 for nonmembers. For reservations, call the museum at 419-214-5000.
