City eyes $2M sludge pact
The city of Toledo is considering spending $2 million a year for a Baltimore company to haul away sludge from the city’s sewer plant, but said the firm cannot continue the practice of dumping the leftover sewage material on a man-made island in Oregon called Facility 3. Mayor D. Michael Collins said the city’s contract with S&L Fertilizer of Toledo expires on Dec. 1 and that he sought to forbid future dumping of Toledo’s sludge on Facility 3 with a clause in a new contract. The sludge also cannot be used on farmland anywhere in the Maumee River basin, Mr. Collins said.
