Gibsonburg wins team title at Ohio wrestling tourney

BLADE STAFF

MCCOMB — In its first year in the Ohio Wrestling League tournament, Gibsonburg entered at the top, winning the team title with 165.5 points to top runner-up Cory-Rawson (158) and third-place Arcadia (114.5).

The Golden Bears, who had previously competed in the now-defunct Suburban Lakes League, had five individual champions. Jacob Kissell won at 138 pounds, Ryan Widmer at 145, Damen Escobedo at 152, Nick Metcalf at 195, and Jacob Auld at 220.

Fellow Toledo Area Athletic Conference members Northwood and Cardinal Stritch each had one individual winner. Brandon Kretz took the title at 126 pounds for the Rangers, and Christian Peters claimed the 182-pound crown for the Cardinals.

Gibsonburg had never won an SLL wrestling team championship in its 39 years competing in the that league before becoming a full-time TAAC member this school year. The TAAC does not have enough wrestling programs among its eight regular members to hold a wrestling tournament.
