Cousineau qualifies to World Championships

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. — Temperance native and Ohio State All-American diver Cheyenne Cousineau is headed for the World Championships.

Cousineau and Murphy Bromberg paired to qualify in the women’s synchronized platform event Monday with a score of 595.23 points over two lists of dives at the USA Diving trials. The World Championships are July 19 to Aug. 4 in Barcelona.

For Cousineau, it was the latest feat in a career that continues to gain momentum. The 21-year-old Bedford graduate won a Big Ten championship in the 10-meter platform last spring in her first year back since suffering a stroke in 2010 and earned All-American honors in March with a fourth-place finish at the NCAA championship meet.

Cousineau pulled out of two lead-up events to the world trials with a pulled abdomen, but returned strong over two days of diving at Florida State. She and Bromberg, a Duke-bound high school senior who competes for Ohio State’s club team, beat the next-closest challengers by more than 70 points.

“It means a lot,” Cousineau said. “I knew Murphy and I had good shot. We really enjoy diving with each other, and it’s all about having fun. We know what we’re capable of, so we just remind each other of that. I knew that this was the meet that mattered, so even if (the injury) was still hurting, I was going to deal with it.”

Cousineau is one of 15 men’s and women’s divers who will compete for Team USA at the worlds.
