The wind wins again – final day of walleye tournament called off

PORT CLINTON – A brisk southwest wind flirting with 20 knots produced three-foot waves here early Sunday morning and forced the cancellation of the final day of the Cabela's National Walleye Tour event on Lake Erie.

The tournament format calls for Michigan pro angler John Gillman, who was leading the field after Saturday’s first day of fishing, to be declared the winner. Gillman brought in a five-fish limit on Saturday that weighed of 51.7 pounds – the best single-day total in tour history.

Minnesota pro Chris Gilman finishes second, with his Saturday catch of 47.54 pounds. In third place is Perry Good, also from Minnesota, whose five-fish limit weighed 47.16 pounds.

The tournament attracted about 130 entries from at least 15 states and Ontario. The event’s start, scheduled for Friday, was postponed due to a strong north wind that brought out four-foot waves and a small craft advisory.
